A bathroom exhaust fan is designed to remove excess humidity and moisture from the area to prevent condensation and mold growth.  A good quality fan will keep your home feeling dry and comfortable and ensure that bathroom odors stay in the bathroom.

How do know if your fan should be replaced?

  • Most homes have low-quality exhaust fans installed at the time of construction, and they are rarely replaced or updated by the home owner.  Contractors, builders, and even home owners tend to spend money on the fixtures in the home that are most often see.  Most people won’t notice their fans until they notice mold, humidity, or a failure.
  • You should consider upgrading your bathroom fan if:

    • Your fan rattles, whines, or shakes when it starts up (this may mean the bearings are failing)
    • Your fan has totally stopped working
    • Your bathroom doesn’t have a fan at all
    • Your current fan does not adequately remove moisture during showering
    • Your current fan is too noisy to be used frequently
    • Your current fan drips or shows evidence of corrosion
    • You see evidence of mold growth on the walls or ceiling in the bathroom

How often should your bathroom fan be used?

  • Bathroom fans should be used at all times during showering, and preferably for 30-60 minutes after you have finished showering.  This will help to address steam in the air and facilitate drying the shower stall rapidly which will limit mold growth on the caulking and grout.
  • Most contractor-grade bathroom units are too noisy to be left on after showering, but newer high-quality models are almost silent
